Of people , places and ( touchless ) things

This issue carries much on IOPSA activities as well as profiles on people all in different roles , who are making a difference in our industry .
We come to the end of the IOPSA / PIRB Strategy 2025 where we questioned IOPSA on progress . They are to be commended for an impressive start in implementing the Strategy 2025 .
Amongst our Personality Profiles in this issue , we welcome the appointment of Kurt Vermaak as Technical Manager at the Cape Town office of IOPSA . We also profile Dean Cane and Jabulile Nkosi , both committed plumbers running their own businesses with great enthusiasm and skill .
Our project is the use of heat pumps in a new development where over 300 will eventually be installed , implementing the Energy Efficiency standard XA . Not only that , but an innovative technology employing refrigerant gas .
On the training side we covered the launch of the Roofing Academy and waterproofing , the latter being of interest to plumbers from expanding their knowledge and adding to the services they offer . We also look at a new training centre in Cape Town .
Our feature is on Touchless Technology , part one , where this technology is not optional anymore and must be considered essential in all public places . This is also supported by the IAPMO contribution which shows work being done in the hand washing arena in developing countries , which is an improvement from no hand washing facilities in the past .
Vollie Brink keeps plumbers informed from the engineering perspective and credit to Vollie who is now writing to ‘ Dear Plumbers ’, an acknowledgement to the women in plumbing .
George Maritz provides an interesting view on plumbing vs water and wastewater reticulation .
The IOPSA survey on plumbing and the municipalities makes for interesting reading . Not only are 87 % of the municipalities not receiving clear audits , but also related to plumbing there is a huge lack of control and knowledge regarding the role of the plumber and water which will account for the loss of unaccounted-for water now running in the region of 54 %. I really suggest one reads through the document to gain a perspective . Cape Town leads the pack together with Jo ’ burg and eThekwini and thereafter it is all downhill . PA
