FITTING THOUGHT 1 The bigger picture Oftentimes in business, you have to negotiate customers and even employees who cannot see the bigger picture, but it also sometimes happens to us as business owners. The bigger picture is that we ARE going to be faced with water shortages — it is not a case of if anymore but when. The population is just expanding at too a rapid rate and with all the red tape we have to deal with, including corruption and milking of the coffers, it just does not seem logical or likely that this is a problem that we are going to be able to solve in the next 20 to 30 years. Infrastructure projects and building dams can take many years, even without any of the regular challenges that engineers face, and in that time, the population just increases faster than supply. Take for instance our running series on grey water and rainwater harvesting. I find it strange that individually, there are many projects and documents and proposals, but no collective action as an industry that holds the population’s health in their hands in terms of water delivery. When you speak to plumbers in the industry, maybe half of them have any knowledge about grey water. It is looked upon as just a simple process, when in fact it can be dangerous with all the pathogens that can contaminate the water before it even gets to storage. The bigger picture is that it is only a matter of time before it will become part of how we as humans live, where we use rainwater and grey water daily, and it is therefore essential that the industry is prepared, up to date on technology, and has the knowledge to work with these resources. What if a pipe has been installed incorrectly, contaminates the potable water supply, and causes serious illness or even death? I feel it is something that deserves greater attention. There is no use in operating in silos and duplicating work on something so crucial. We then continue with our rainwater harvesting guidelines on page 30 and introduce the Water Research Commission’s proposed guide for grey water harvesting and use on page 33. Our project this month is the newly built University of Mpumalanga (page 42), while our feature looks at successful harvesting of rainwater and grey water on page 48.
