point highlighted by De Villiers was that adopting
different methods of doing things was necessary
to achieve different results. “We cannot do the
same thing every single year with the people
around us and expect different results. Let’s
change their lives, let’s change the curriculums,
let’s change the processes. You’ll be surprised to
see what will happen,” he concluded.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS IN THE INDUSTRY
After guests had enjoyed a buffet dinner, it
was time to announce the evening’s award
winners. IOPSA operations manager Steve
Brown was called upon to do the honours.
Before announcing the winners, Brown
took the opportunity to thank Smith for his
dedication and leadership. “I want to thank
Lea for the leadership and support he gave
us [and] our office.”
Other people were also acknowledged for
the role they play and the impact they have
on IOPSA. The first person was Robyn Smith
— Leah Smith’s wife — for the support she
gave to the president of the institution. Debbie
Donaldson was acknowledged for her role in
improving the industry with regard to training.
FEM was recognised for their part in making
many of IOPSA’s initiatives around training
a reality. Lastly, Kaela Bell and Michelle van
Rensburg from IOPSA were acknowledged for
their phenomenal work at the institute.
