Where responsibility lies !

Much in this issue refers in one way or another to the responsibility of all role players in construction , no less the sub-contractor .
The IOPSA article reinforces the responsibility of property owners to their tenants , the public and those on the construction site . The various types of insurance are needed to fulfil different roles and should never be confused , failing which the property owners could face huge damages . The selection and installation of compliant products and systems is also reinforced as failure to abide by these requirements is not covered by any insurance and as noted in the article , some insurers have rejected claims in the past because of non-compliance .
Uwe Putlitz , in his contribution , reinforces the issue of procurement not only of product but of disciplines being employed right along to the sub-contractor – all of which must be certified competant and compliant .
We have the JASWIC list covering two months this issue as there was only one entry last month . Good to see the tap manufacturers / importers maintaining their standards against scary odds of noncompliant taps and mixers entering this country . This topic will be subject to a feature in the August issue with input from the NRCS .
The second part of competence concludes the vexatious issue of competence with certain disciplines picking and choosing which part they can choose and consider themselves competent . The application of competencies makes for interesting reading and sums up the saying that the ‘ Whole is greater than the Parts ’.
We review the Middleburg / Witbank plumbing travelling exhibition , which was highly successful , again with the right level of visitor attending which included Witbank plumbers . Hopefully exhibitors are beginning to appreciate that such exhibitions are not about numbers but quality of visitors .
Our feature on tooling is around theft and insurance . These are literally the ‘ tools of the trade ’ and the figure of 53 % ( UK ) of tools that are stolen provided the idea to discuss this aspect of the trade .
The Electrolux Transition launch in Johannesburg on 1 June is covered , which allowed the Durban and Cape Town launches to follow without being pre-empted by the article . Nonetheless , each region has its share of visitors in pictures online .
IAPMO through their IWSH sets a fine example of giving back and accepting many in our industry in their own way do give back , it may be good to have a central philanthropic plumbing organisation for our country . Just a thought , maybe , perhaps , just needs a few bucks !!!
Our Tell me Why , Women in Plumbing and Women on Site series continue . In all three series one can only be encouraged by the positiveness of the people interviewed . Augurs well for our industry .
The Sandton Gate – The Terrace project takes a more personal examination of the people / disciplines involved rather than the technical side . Thanks to Lino Ferro for providing this perspective . We did retain the Conditions of Tender supplied by the Engineer as it spells out clearly what was required .
We end off with Patrick Gordon providing us with thoughtful input on Thermostatic Valves .
Enjoy
