36 WOMAN IN PLUMBING
SA Women Plumbing Apprentices share their thoughts . ( Part 4 )
Edited by David Smith . Sourced by SA Women in Plumbing ( SAWIP )
Continuing our series on Women in Plumbing , at the request of SAWIP , we are chatting to apprentice plumber Veronica Ntho . As Plumbing Africa has consistently maintained , we do not wait for Women ’ s Month but recognise women monthly / all the time .
What is the best part of being an apprentice plumber ? The best part of being an apprentice plumber is getting to do plumbing on my own . Learning how to fix pipe leaks on exposed pipes , soldering copper pipes and laying drainpipes for plumbing construction .
What is the worst part of being an apprentice plumber ? The worst part of being an apprentice plumber is having to chop concrete flooring , digging trenches and lifting 200L geysers .
How are you managing the worst part ? I handle the worst by asking for assistance when I feel that I won ’ t be able to lift the geyser . I take breaks in between when I chop the concrete floor and when digging trenches . Veronica Ntho , apprentice plumber
What do you believe is plumbing all about ? I believe plumbing is all about service delivery and quality problem solving . It ’ s all about comfort coming from the fixtures that plumbers can install in houses , business offices , hospitals , and schools .
Veronica Ntho
What will you contribute to plumbing when you qualify ? I will contribute with plumbing services as I will be able to start my own business . I will also contribute my plumbing technical expertise to the community I grew up in , by doing yearly workshops on how to maintain and avoid blocking drains .
Who is your employer ? My employer is IOPSA .
Are you a team player ? I am a team player and I believe that ‘ Rome wasn ’ t built in a day ’ – it takes a team ’ s effort and time to achieve a goal , there are tasks like digging a trench , it requires a team to assist each other , lifting up geysers , chopping the walls and other tasks that require teamwork . I make sure when working in a team communication is clear , and everyone in the team understands the task given . Teamwork must be recognised as a mutual goal for all team members . PA
