Plumbing Africa
Moving with the times,
quality, and compliance
Industries are changing at a fast pace these days — keeping up
is the challenge.
Being new to the plumbing industry, I have learnt a great deal over
the past few months, but I am by no means anywhere near being an
expert. However, what I am seeing is that some things are applicable
for all involved in the built environment and across all of our industries.
Technology, methods, manufacturing processes, and regulations are
just not slowing down. Before long, we are literally going to be able to
control everything through our mobile device, while the authorities are
pushing for efficient and sustainable solutions and we keep hearing
about the fast-tracking of transformation and B-BBEE compliance.
There is also a zealous emphasis on maintaining quality standards in
the industry.
Needless to say, among our busy schedules (and that is applicable
to everyone from large corporates to small businesses) we have a
lot that we need to be aware of constantly. Keeping up to speed with
everything may be really difficult for some, but staying on the front foot
is essential, not only for maintaining a competitive advantage, but also
for the investment made into staff through training. This is needed for
development and to ensure compliance with the various standards and
best practices for which business owners are ultimately responsible. It
has been said that you cannot judge someone for poor workmanship
when this is all they know or have been taught.

Keeping up to date with what is happening in your world should
become part of your business routine (even if only once a month) to
ensure you do not have to deal with any unnecessary comebacks
or issues arising from non-compliance. Falling behind with any new
regulations puts your business at risk and you also land up playing
catch-up and then putting out fires. This wastes another one of our very
precious resources, which is time — not to mention costs.
In this issue of Plumbing Africa, we continue looking at the NWRS 2
document, specifically the case studies on water reuse, legionella, and
UV treatment of water. We also feature pumps in their different forms.
Our project is on the relining of the pipes in the Castle of Good Hope
and we profile Wynand Deysel, an energetic plumber from Centurion.
Mark de Wet, IOPSA’s national technical manager, kicks off his monthly
column focused on the technical aspects of the industry. In upcoming
issues, we will run a series of technical features, starting with hot and
cold water supplies and standards.
If you would like to be involved, either let Plumbing Africa cover your
commercial or industrial projects, or involve yourself with editorial
contributions — please get in touch at [email protected].
Enjoy the read in-between your quality and compliant projects! PA
