The above are the scientific explanations as to where such filters are applied . For the homeowner the offerings vary from whole house , top of counter , undercounter and these , depending on the desired outcome , perform different functions .

Top of counter are for the most to provide quality drinking water and the units can consist of one to a few filters . Same with the undercounter system providing clean water . For the whole house a system is connected at the point where the incoming line from municipality meets the property .
Generally , the three-filter system serves as follows :
• First filter is 20 microns removing the larger sediment .
• Second filter is a carbon block which removes bad taste and odours
• Third filter is one micron and removes fine sediment
All have filters and these are replaceable quarterly or even twice a year . This provides a call back opportunity for the plumber and fits well with our ‘ preventive maintenance ’ programme check list .
Understanding the different types , which the reputable manufacturers will be happy to assist with , makes for the correct application for the building . Also , the range of filtration products and systems is wide and can be confusing , hence using a reputable supplier . This article does not presume to offer a technical ‘ how to ’ or even pretend to have all the answers but merely to provide the business potential for plumbers and suppliers to grow their markets .

NATIONAL Blue Drop Risk Rating ( BDRR ) PROFILE The National BDRR profile for the country is summarised as follows :
• 48 % of water supply systems are in the low-risk category ,
• 18 % are in the medium risk category ,
• 11 % are in the high-risk category ,
• 23 % are in the critical risk category .
Enough of a reason for plumbers to up-sell and start broadening their businesses . PA
