Plumbing Africa
We all have a voice
Harbouring thoughts of “Why should I bother — it doesn’t matter
anyway” seems to have become the norm.
Maybe it’s just me, but the more interactions I have, the more I feel
this is the reality. There is this sense of hopelessness and utter lack
of faith everywhere. We all think someone is trying to mistreat us and
we have lost all trust in society. Everyone is always looking for an
argument. “What can my small voice do anyway,” you say.
I see things differently. I see that we have lost our voices and with the
loss, we have demotivated ourselves. We have taken a step back to
where we just accept things that do not meet our standards. And yes,
beating on the same door over and over, you do reach a point where
you feel you should reconsider your choices, but we quit without
realising how close we actually are to succeeding. Our small voices
spend more time expressing how we have become the victims than
standing up for ourselves and at least trying to make it right.
We do have a voice, and you should stop thinking that it does not
matter or that you cannot get anywhere. Sometimes, all that is
needed is your voice to get that ball rolling or to get a group together;
to put that idea out there or to say this or that is wrong; or to call out
someone who is not playing by the rules.
Democracy is a word that has been thrown around quite extensively
of late. “So what?”, you say. Well, democracy means control of
an organisation or group by most of its members and a system of
government by the entire population through elected representatives.
South Africa is a democracy; it is our country, and it is up to each

of us to have a voice and stand up for what is right — and that
takes work, effort, and participation. I would like to challenge all of
you to take on 2018 with this in mind, and know that your voice is
important to someone and may just be the needed breakthrough to
the next level.
As we start off another year, I trust you will experience immense
success and the growth that 2018 will bring.
In this issue, we share some valuable feedback from the Q&A webinar
session that addressed plumbing sector issues (page 57). We learn
about building management systems and their application for the
plumbing industry (page 52). Our feature this month looks at the oh-
so-beautiful 140 West Street in Sandton, which is home to international
law firm Hogan Lovells (page 38), and you can read about retrofitted
solar geysers and the SANS 10400-XA requirements on page 69. Based
on the feedback from the previous competition, we decided to launch
another Wall of Shame competition, so submit your entries!
We want to know what is important to you and invite you to engage
with us. Remember, you do have a voice, so send an email through to
[email protected] with your suggestions, comments, or
whatever is on your mind — even if it is just a comment about what
you think of Plumbing Africa. We strive to be a world-class brand!
Enjoy this next packed edition of Plumbing Africa as we set 2018 off
with a bang, and happy plumbing! PA
