When Vicki Jordaan started working in the plumbing world , she had no idea how to recognise a copper elbow . She had initially begun her career as a tile buyer for a large DIY retail company . Their plumbing division needed an extra pair of hands , and she was moved to the plumbing department .
Today she works as a procurement manager with House of Plumbing . Her days are spent defining and formulating strategies , managing and developing an import programme as well as choosing and sourcing product ranges both locally and internationally .
She is also involved in developing business plans with key and strategic suppliers and has to negotiate with suppliers as well . Her job also includes forecasting and ensuring optimal services levels . She manages stock and communicates with stakeholders on key issues . A busy and demanding job by all standards .
“ It ’ s challenging , but ultimately very rewarding ,” she says . “ I ’ ve been in a male-dominated environment since I started my career but have learned that if you educate yourself and are able to speak at the same level you can earn respect .”
She lives by the principal that respect is earned , which spurs her on to keep up to date with trends and keep her ear to the ground as far as what is happening in the market goes .
Jordaan shares her advice for young women and learners who are considering plumbing as a career . “ Never limit yourself by what you think you cannot or shouldn ’ t do ,” she says . “ Do what you know will make you happy and give you the freedom to achieve your goals . If you love what you do , you will not work a day in your life !” PA
