Due to the success of our previous Plumbing Apprentices series last year , this year we will be running a new series which continues to share the amazing experiences of women who have entered the plumbing industry . Our first apprentice of the new series is Shalom Makubvure of Powerade Plumbers & Projects .
1 . What is the best part of being an apprentice plumber ? The best part is seeing a smile of satisfaction from a client ’ s face with the work done . Being able to do something that you never thought you would , e . g installing geysers . The best feeling is knowing that you can do things that society thinks can only be done by men , it makes me feel like an independent citizen and I won ’ t have to rely on a man to do things for me .
2 . What is the worst part of being an apprentice plumber ? The worst part is constantly having people ask about my career choice and being reminded that plumbing is for men only and to be mocked about it .
3 . How are you managing the worst part ? I have managed this by being confident in myself and not caring about what other people think about my life choices because at the end of the day I am doing what makes me happy . Also by constantly reminding myself why I am here and believing that I can do anything . 4 . What do you believe plumbing is all about ? Plumbing is all about improving the lives of people hygienically as well as protecting the environment from waste pollution . I also believe that plumbing contributes a lot to people ’ s health and wellbeing .
5 . What will you contribute to plumbing when you qualify ? I would make sure that the world is a better place to live in and ensure that clients always feel satisfied with my work . To be an inspiration to other women out there who are young just like me by empowering them to believe in themselves and that they can do anything in life .
6 . Who is your employer ? Powerade Plumbers & Projects .
Shalom Makubvure , apprentice plumber .
7 . Are you a team player ? Yes , I am a team player . I know my duty , I am reliable and I can work under minimum supervision . I also have great communication skills . PA
