A detailed visual inspection is similar to ‘pre-use’ checks’, in that it is used to spot defects. It can be done in-house by a competent person (pre-use checks should be part of a user’s training) and detailed visual inspections should be recorded. When doing an inspection, look for the following: • Twisted, bent or dented stiles. • Cracked, worn, bent or loose rungs. • Missing or damaged tie rods. • Cracked or damaged welded joints, loose rivets or damaged stays. • Missing, lose or worn footings and non-slip devices. • Pulleys are not worn. • Locking devices work properly. • Bracing is in good condition. • Ropes are not frayed or worn. Make pre-use checks and inspect ladder stability devices and other accessories in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep records so that you can track findings as well as identify any ladders that are missed during the inspections. If ladders are found later, after inspections have been carried out, they should be thoroughly checked before any use. PA The Institute for Work at Height (IFWH) was formed as a Trade Organisation in January 2009 being a merger of the Specialised Access Engineering Manufacturers Association (SAEMA) and the Rope Access And Fall Arrest Association (RAFAA) desirous of creating safety awareness and in turn professionalism in the overall Work At Height Industry. The main objective for which the Institute has been established is to promote communal and group interests of those companies or individuals engaged in the specialised access work at height industry, including any other associated operations or activities thereto.
