The operations
of Umphakathi
Development and
Training are:
Start co-operatives with training
and mentorship in:
• Specialist plumbing area
• Business
• Finance
• Health and Safety
• Plumbing (apprenticeship)
Theory and practical
training begins
From week 9, start
workplace experience
and start earning on an
outcome basis
After the two years: they have the choice to remain as
a co-operative or evolve into a (Pty) Ltd company and
be a self-sustaining business. They will have two years
of recorded experience behind them as well as the
connections they have made in the industry. From year
2–3, they continue training in their speciality field and
attend additional training to complete the trade test.
UMPHAKATHI’S VALUE CHAIN
• Umphakathi Development and Training is the training centre.
• Umphakathi Enterprise and Skills Development is the non-profit organisation.
• Independent Plant Hire is a plumbing supply store for plant, equipment, small tools, fixings and fasteners,
PPE and safety equipment for hire and sale.
• Max-form is a paperless project management system.
• It has three companies on a mentorship programme: Umphakathi Rhino, Umphakathi Springbok,
and Wise-Manufacturing.
