BUSINESS AND TRAINING 51 Training facilitators should be subject matter experts. NEED FOR TRAINING The earlier statement that an urgent need exists for plumber training relating to SANS, is not an exaggeration. Do you, as a plumber, feel the need to increase your knowledge with regard to specific areas of your profession? Most plumbers admit that their level of knowledge regarding the SANS regulations is limited and should be improved. Have you ever sat in a training centre, listening to a monotonous presenter reading from a manual? Have your questions been answered satisfactorily, based on true facts as contained in the SANS regulations? It is one thing to attend specialised plumbing training courses, but quite another to receive quality training. Quality training can only be achieved if it is based on the principles of the ‘art of teaching’. What does this mean, you may ask? The application of teaching skills incorporates the following essential elements: 1. Effective introduction and importance of the subject matter for the student. 2. Conversational manner in presentation of subject matter. 3. Use of questions. 4. Proper introduction of each subheading. 5. Facilitating the process of assisting and guiding students to appreciate the importance of reading with comprehension and understanding. 6. Application of facts made clear in conjunction with SANS regulations. www.plumbingafrica.co.za 7. Appropriate use of visual aids. 8. Practical examples used to explain the codes in ‘plumbing language’. 9. Main points of the training to stand out by way of revision sessions. The trainer/facilitator must be a master of the subject, which calls for thorough preparation, understanding, and practical application of the acquired knowledge. COLLABORATIVE TRAINING As a recognised and accredited training provider, the Electrolux/Kwikot Training Centre located in Benoni, Gauteng, working in conjunction with Independent Water Heating Solutions and Training led by industry veteran Deon Smit, continues to offer plumbers the required and expected levels of knowledge in electric water heaters, solar (which is Construction CETA accredited), and heat pumps. These courses are designed to equip you to increase your expertise. The training is considered ‘old school’ and we believe in a facilitator who applies the principles and the art of teaching. At the Electrolux/Kwikot Training Centre, we pride ourselves in the fact that the foregoing work is applied and achieved. In 2019, training will be rolled out nationally to the following regions: Cape Town, Free State, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. So, if you are serious about your career and wish to empower yourself with knowledge, register for the training that you need. PA April 2019 Volume 25 I Number 2
