Saving the Planet in Our Own Backyard

As a child, I vividly remember car rides on the highway during which the windshield was a mosaic of splattered insects. I always felt bad for the little bugs and wished there was a way to avoid the unnecessary loss of life. Now as an adult, I can’ t remember the last time I had to scrub the windows just to get them clean after a long drive.
Another cherished memory is visiting my grandparents garden where I delighted in wandering through it and watching the cloud of butterflies enjoy the colorful summer blooms. Unfortunately, these phenomena have become a rarity in our modern world.
We’ re losing natural habitat from urbanization, deforestation and agricultural expansion. The effects of climate change are compounding these losses by affecting the flowering times of plants and their ability to survive extreme weather patterns. This has led to a decline of approximately
