that, each week of your share of the harvest connects you to both the people and the land that grew it. Connection comes from your direct investment into growing the food— not to several middlemen steps to pack and transport and sell it to you. And those investments surely help a farm grow— springtime is a financial puzzle for farmers each year as they have huge outlays to grow the food that won’ t be purchased for months. Incoming CSA funds this time of year balance the equation. CSAs are the most direct way to support local farms.
That being said, there are a number of myths surrounding CSAs that keep people from jumping in. Folks sometimes think a CSA is too expensive. CSAs are actually a pretty inexpensive way to get really high-quality produce. The breakdown is between $ 15-20 per week- you get way more, and higher quality for your money this way. The balance of the cost is usually due at one time but some farms split up registration costs weekly or monthly – be sure to ask. People also worry they will just have to eat kale all year. In reality, farmers work extremely hard to plan out a season of constant variety for CSA members and many CSAs let customers choose their favorite options each week, if say kale really isn’ t your thing. Some CSAs include fruit, eggs, cheese etc. There are far more myths we bust in our“ Is a CSA for me?” quiz. If you decide to jump in, most CSAs start by April so hurry— you too can come home with a bag full of community connections— along with the freshest food around.
