Gardening at home has turned Sherri into a forager in the wild World Garden .
states to the south to keep boll weevils from spreading between amateur plots and production farms where the cotton crop could be wiped out by the pesky critters . But thanks to our prime position in the US , I have all the homegrown cotton balls I can use for a year , thanks to just two plants .
Even neighbor kids are encouraged to get involved in my garden . The curious pint-sized visitors are allowed to plant their own seeds if they come at planting time , or experience the satisfying “ thwak ” of pulling a carrot out of the ground at harvest . I send them home with radishes , tomatoes , beets and potatoes so they can see how fun it is to eat what you pull fresh from the ground . And they are thrilled at the sight of 12-foot tall sunflowers , or the random basketball-sized pumpkin that accidentally grew up into my weeping cherry tree and rested comically on top of its petite branches . And they are sent home with zinnia flowers to give to their moms .
My composting efforts have taken off . I have added all manner of organics and natural elements to my garden . In addition to the regular food scraps and coffee grounds , I incorporate 100 % cotton jeans and
t-shirts ( with the non-cotton labels and any grommets or buttons and plastic designs cut off ). Hair clippings and even “ clean ” human urine ( only from folks not taking pharmaceuticals ) make their way into the compost . The results are fantastic — the worms happily munch away on this nutrient-rich feast .
Gardening doesn ’ t have to remain a warm-weather pursuit . In addition to planting carrots , turnips and other cold weather crops , my winter afternoons are spent happily harvesting dried seeds from my summer and fall bounty of pumpkins and corn , or plotting the story for my spring and summer garden design and planting seedlings to be ready to pop in the ground the minute the cold weather gives way .
My home-grown exploits have also made me hyper-aware of the foraging possibilities around me in the world ’ s garden . Wearing my favorite jeans tucked into cowboy boots to stave off ticks , I forage wild raspberries for jam and pancakes , goldenrod stalks for health tinctures and handmade soap , and black walnuts for coffee cakes and homemade stains . Where they exist on private property , I ask for permission from the owner before gleaning .
It has been said that “ life began in a garden .” Even though life seemed to stop during Covid , my gardening life certainly feels like a beautiful beginning .
