cons of the issue based upon a fact sheet prepared by the study group . If the discussions result in consensus among members about the issue , it becomes the position of the League . Only then will the League announce where it stands on an issue . Our positions , consequently , reflect deep understanding and commitment . Our commitment to supporting the Ag Reserve is not taken lightly .
Why are we so committed ? Because we see the Ag Reserve as contributing to our quality of life — and more . Farmers who till the soil produce fresh food for our farmers ’ markets , boost our economy , and help feed those in need by providing fresh produce to local food pantries and food banks , such as Manna , among other activities . Preserving agricultural land and rural open space also contributes to a cleaner environment with better air quality and protection against flooding , as well as offering an escape to those seeking peace and quiet away from nearby downtown streets . Who hasn ’ t taken an autumn hayride , picked blueberries or apples , bicycled on a country road , or visited a vineyard to sample local wine in the Ag Reserve ? And annual educational visits to the Ag Reserve by Montgomery County Public Schools ’ 4th graders mean lifelong memories , such as those of Alex , and , who knows , perhaps the dream of a future career in agriculture .
So , while the League of Women Voters works diligently to ensure the integrity of our electoral process and promotes voter registration , education , and
engagement , we also cast a wider net . We encourage all to visit our website , www . lwvmocomd . org , and learn more about us . And we hope that when you read about the depth and breadth of our activities , you will join us in promoting open government and a better quality of life for all , including suburban residents , farmers , and even 4th graders .
Susan Albertine is president of the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County Maryland . A former schoolteacher , she earned a PhD at the University of Chicago and worked as a professor of English and higher education leader at Temple University , the College of New Jersey , and the Association of American Colleges and Universities before retiring in 2020 .
