added to the landscape and hun-
dreds of evergreens were planted.
There was a lot of experimenta-
tion, Brant remembers, and the
plant positioning mostly happened
when an evergreen would fall off
the back end of a loaded-to-the
gills golf cart. Everything would
stop until the wayward evergreen
was in the ground. When all the
plantings were completed, Hal
turned him and said, “‘Okay, now
you own a nursery!’ That’s when I
went out and bought a shovel and
a book on evergreens!”
Susanna Farm Nursery takes
pride in its old school customer
care and operates with a small
crew that has worked alongside
Brant for many years. A few years
ago Brant’s wife Kris opened a small
garden shop filled with attractive
garden items and distinctive pot-
tery from the Kew Royal Botanic
Gardens in England. To say it’s a
family operation is not an exagger-
ation. Long-time customers have
nicknames and dwarf evergreen
collectors come several times in a
season to see what’s new.
The history of the Ag Reserve
and its many enterprises are an
enduring testament to a love for
the land. Brant’s father with his
passion to propagate dwarf ever-
greens not only led to a thriving
business nurtured and developed
by Brant and his crew, but also
to the creation of place of beauty
where people are inspired by na-
ture’s remarkable and varied green
expressions.
