Plenty Sport : EZINE 27 Walking Football | Page 3

1 ISSUE № 27, DEC 2017 “Why Run when you can Walk ! Walking football is yet another variation of football aimed at keeping peo- ple aged over 50 involved with football. Either due to a lack of mobility or for other reasons they may not able to play the traditional game. The sport can be played both indoors and outdoors. The story goes that it was started in 1950 by the “Famous Five” from Hibernian FC in Edinborough; a dominant forward line from that era. It was first used as a training module. Its popularity grew when it became more struc- tured via the Chester- field F.C. Community Trust and when coverage of a session was carried on Sky Sports News. The key difference in the rules, from standard football, is that if a player runs then they concede a free kick to the other side. A player must have one foot on the ground at all times. This restriction, along with a ban on slide tackles is aimed both at avoiding injuries and facilitating the playing of the sport by those who are physically disadvantaged. With its growing popularity the sport is now included in the Senior Olympics. Although not yet globally embraced the sport is played in Portugal, England and Malaysia where it is used to encourage walking. SANDY HILL NATURE PARK HORSEBACK RIDING $350/hr for 1 or 2 persons .
