3 ISSUE № 18, NOV 2015 Alissa the Spartan ! Alissa Noel is a student of St. Augustine Girls’ High School and her chosen sport is Scrabble. She is currently a member of the Spartans Scrabble Club and playing competitively for about 6 years. She proudly professes that “My highest game score was 585 and my highest single play scored on a single word was 148”. She started playing with her mother at home when she was younger and entered her first Scrabble competition in Form 1. Since then the sport has taken her to Dubai in 2013 to compete in the World Youth Scrabble Championships (WYSC). She placed a commendable 40th out of 130 participants. In Sri Lanka she achieved similar results. She was not dismayed but encour- -aged in knowing she still has a lot to learn after having been defeated at the Championships by much younger children who were barely able to see the scrabble board while seated. Interestingly she has also noted that for the majority of persons at the WYSC, English was not their first language yet they excelled at the game. In aiming to improve her Scrabble skills she also intends to pursue an occupation in the field of Modern Languages & Linguistics and to learn about and appreciate the diverse cultures of our world. When not playing scrabble Alissa also enjoys playing musical instruments, (piano and steelpan), learning foreign languages (French and Spanish in School and Chinese outside of school, Hindi independently) and playing Badminton and Tennis.
