Nature reveals the power of collaboration
Did you know that nature can teach us some of the most practical and enduring lessons for how we live and work together? When we take time to closely observe natural systems, one lesson stands out to me— collaboration creates resilience.
In healthy ecosystems, a variety of species working together strengthens the system as a whole, making it more adaptable to change and more resistant to stress. Life is sustained through relationships: plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms are interconnected in ways that allow nutrients, water, and information to flow continuously. Nothing is wasted. What one organism no longer needs becomes a resource for another, creating a closed-loop system where energy and materials are constantly reused.
Forests offer a powerful example of this. Trees are not isolated individuals competing for survival; they are part of a deeply connected network. Through underground fungal partnerships— referred to as mycorrhizal networks— trees can exchange nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, and even send chemical signals that

help neighboring trees respond to stressors such as pests or drought. When a tree dies, it doesn’ t mark the end of its contribution. Instead, it becomes a source of nourishment, returning its stored nutrients back to the soil to support new growth. This ongoing cycle enhances the overall health, stability, and resilience of the forest. Agricultural systems can mirror these same principles. For example, farmers often integrate black locust trees into their planting designs because of their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, benefiting nearby crops such as chestnut trees that rely on fertile conditions to establish and thrive. Over time, as the black locust trees mature and begin to compete for sunlight, they can be selectively harvested. Their wood— dense, rot-resistant, and long- lasting— has practical value for fence posts and building materials. In this way, the tree continues to serve a purpose even after it is cut, contributing both to the productivity of the land and the needs of the farmer.
These examples point to a larger truth: nature does not rely on isolated effort— it depends on cooperation. The lesson is clear— when we work together, thoughtfully and intentionally, we build something far more resilient than we ever could alone.
Principle of Permaculture
Observing nature and applying the lessons to communities and human connection is a principle of permaculture. Seeing through the lens of permaculture can change the way we do everything, not just plant trees— and I hear this often from others who are into this work. It is more than a farming practice or a set of techniques.
