“ Look outside . Are the trees and flowers blooming right now ? Are people visiting orchards and picking fruit ?” “ Noooo !! It ’ s winter !” “ You ’ re right ! So then , how did your apples stay fresh ? Where did your mangoes grow ? How did you have a fruit salad with out of season strawberries , blackberries , and blueberries ? Where in the world is your lunch coming from ??”
Thus begins the next phase of our study . Where does the fresh food we consume in the winter originate from , and what is the journey it takes in order to end up in our lunchboxes ? How do the threats facing the rainforest affect our students in Maryland ? How are we all connected to the land ? How do our actions affect the environment ? How do we take action ?
Our students ’ sense of community starts small , a cozy circle that is comprised of family , peers , teachers , all sharing a common geographic location and familiar ecosystem , but now we are broadening their definition of community by challenging them to consider themselves part of a global community , as we are all citizens of the Earth . Our first grade leaders have the ability to be the change they want to see in this world . We hope that this year of hands-on learning will inspire a life-long appreciation of our environment , motivate them to recognize the value of conservation , and ignite a spark within them to impact our planet for the better .
