and shorelines . The Agricultural Reserve and bordering parks , like the C & O Canal towpath and Black Hills Regional Park , offer countless birding hotspots .
To learn more about how to identify area birds and where some of the best hotspots are , there are many online resources including Cornell ’ s Lab of Ornithology ’ s All About Birds website , www . allaboutbirds . org / news / and their Ebird page , ebird . org / home . Additionally , some of the best advice comes from area birders who are out and about on the trails . Easy to spot , they ’ re the quiet ones with binoculars in their hands !
Local photographer , Susan Petro , developed a passion for birding while pursuing her love of photography and nature . Instead of using binoculars and a good birding guide , she prefers to capture the essence of each bird in their natural environment from behind the lens of her camera . Whether they ’ re high in the treetops , feasting on berries or seeds , or foraging on the ground , the desire to discover and learn about new birds inspires her to get outside , no matter the weather , to explore every corner of the Agricultural Reserve .
