Kelsey says , “ Hey , learn from us ... ask questions ! This is why we do what we do !”
Computer-based , GPS-driven hi-tech farm equipment is replacing traditional methods of planting . The Stablers over the years have always embraced and tried new technologies and relied on advances in science . “ Even though we have fewer acres than our grandfather did , we ’ re still yielding as much or more bushels of produce due to the technological advancements in Ag ,” reports Shelby . Both daughters grew up with technology and with Kelsey ’ s degree in accounting she brings a new skill set to the farm .
Adding to the bottom line with the produce stand is their first love , raising and breeding their beloved Angus cattle . “ Working with the cattle was also our first involvement financially with the farm operation . Kelsey and I purchased some animals to show , and we ended up doing very well all across the country , winning national titles . From that point on , people were seeking out our genetics and purchasing from us . That ’ s how we started to financially benefit the farm operation as well ,” says Shelby . Years involved with 4H , showing in the junior division , winning awards for their Angus cattle , then later traveling the country and showing at major livestock show circuits was the highlight of their year . “ Getting to travel to all these cool places , meeting people and seeing old friends who are like family has led to our main involvement
at the farm ,“ says Kelsey . And it was at the show circuit that Kelsey met her husband .
“ Our dad always says that with every new generation we get farther and farther away from our food source ,“ muses Shelby . “ Hopefully people can continue to appreciate what we do and support us locally at our produce stand and know where their food comes from .” And so the farm stand is a touch point between consumer and farmer . When so many lives changed during the pandemic those who farm didn ’ t skip a beat . They didn ’ t hunker down ; they headed out like they do every day . For Kelsey she hopes that folks who connect with their farm will “ understand the farm lifestyle and what I hope to leave to my kids . We do it because it is truly in our blood .”
