Born fighting to protect the rural upcounty area , 48 years later Sugarloaf Citizens ’ Association ( SCA ) still stands firmly against threats to farming and open space . Preserving those values today demands that we address climate change — and the Ag Reserve has a vital role to play . Growing more local food will play an increasingly significant role in feeding us . Many county farmers already practice “ no till ” and “ cover cropping ,” practices that retain soil and prevent runoff . But we must increase regenerative farming practices including rotational grazing , reduced chemical inputs , diversified plantings and enhanced pollinator habitat to increase carbon sequestration .
Thoughtfully done , there ’ s also a place for more solar energy in the Reserve . That ’ s why SCA worked tirelessly for passage of a Council zoning text amendment that increases potential farm capacity for solar generation from 120 % to 200 % and for the “ conditional use ” process for commercial solar array applications , with the caveat that Soil types I & II are exempted . SCA was also the first to recommend that the large industrial acreage and buildings at the Dickerson coal plant be converted to solar generation and storage .
