ing practices benefits the earth by preventing harmful chemicals from entering the environment , and the local food distribution keeps the carbon footprint low . Finally , donors benefit by supporting critical needs within our strained local food system — those of local vegetable and fruit farmers and those of families facing food insecurity .
Michael Protas of One Acre Farm , one of the seven participating farmers in the Community FarmShare program added , “ For years , we have asked our CSA members for donations to support our efforts growing produce for food insecure families . Community FarmShare will not only manage the logistics of these donations , but allow us to focus on what we do best — growing produce .”
Another initiative invites community members to participate from home . Plant an Extra Row , which sprouted out of the efforts of Sustainable Barnesville along with WUMCO Help ( the emergency assistance organization for western upper Montgomery County ), encourages backyard gardeners to plant extra vegetables in their gardens and donate them to a local food assistance provider . Many gardeners have enthusiastically responded and done just that , bringing their abundance to WUMCO Help , ensuring that their nutritious produce , grown with care , is brought to neighbors in need .
