Local Agriculture Is Dependent on the Whole Community
farm ’ s newly constructed office , a space built through generous grants awarded last year in response to the pandemic . I was warm and comfortable — something I thought would never be possible working on a farm during winter !
I was struck on the call by the people I was brainstorming with who had helped make this possible . Their efforts to help secure grants for our farm contributed to its success throughout the COVID pandemic . We were able to install high tunnels and expand our growing season so that now , instead of feeding our community from June to November , we are able to expand production all year long .
During the meeting , I realized that my dream job at One Acre Farm would not have been possible without the tremendous effort and dedication of many of those very people on the call . From the moment I declared my interest in farming , I have been swept up in a current of support , enthusiasm , and encouragement . It is rare for farmers to meet people not in the farming profession who work longer or harder than they do . The twelve-hour days they tirelessly clock at the height of growing season might only be compared to the determination and work ethic of the passionate individuals associated with local government and nonprofits who support local farms .
