Working with Farmers to Transform Agriculture
In order to sustainably feed the world ’ s growing population
In Maryland , across the United States , and around the world out the years , especially since the arrival of seven grandchildren . When I asked about his thoughts on why this farm has worked out so well , he reminisced that he and Angela and his siblings had to make many hard choices over the years , large and small , and while they always hoped they would be the right decisions , “… sometimes you make a choice that doesn ’ t work out so well . So the important thing is to not dwell on it , but learn from it and move on .”
Managing Rapid Growth
All these diversified activities were carefully introduced and refined over the years to ensure they build toward success . It takes a team of experienced professionals to maintain quality in agriculture management , events , marketing , the retail store , pick-your-own , produce warehouse operations , and the IT and HR functions . More than 200 part-time or full-time employees comprise the team , making Butler ’ s a significant employer in the County . Once they hire , they make an effort to establish trust , then “ stay out of their way and let them do their jobs ,” as Tyler says . One employee I spoke with said “… people at Butler ’ s know they are part of something bigger than just a job ; we are part of the farming community , a family gathering place , a valuable resource to people all over the County . It ’ s fun to work here because people love to visit here !”
