Born fighting to protect the rural upcounty area , some 47 years later Sugarloaf Citizens ’ Association ( SCA ) still stands firmly against threats to farming and open space . As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Agricultural Reserve , our conviction is unwavering : to prevent industrial / commercial nonfarm development in the Ag Reserve , and to nurture a more climate-resilient region .
SCA strongly supports regenerative agriculture and is working in multiple ways to foster its use . This system of farming principles and practices builds and enriches soils , increases profits and biodiversity , enhances resilience to climate instability , improves water infiltration rates , and captures and retains more carbon in soil to help reverse global climate trends .
SCA also supports renewable energy for Montgomery County — but not on farmland . When advised that the coal plant in Dickerson was to be decommissioned , we proposed that the hundreds of acres of buildings and industrial space at that critical transmission juncture be used for solar generation and storage . Both the county and GenOn are now actively working to see this transformation occur .
