Planting , cultivating , harvesting , and wintering are part and parcel of farm life , and The New Day Project embraces these seasonal rituals with zest . Lightly facilitated conversations and agricultural activities coupled with friendly interactions with a variety of farm animals — engender calmness and community . After a day of R & R at the farm , a senior hospital executive reported , “ This was a wonderful opportunity to be quiet , to have the freedom to just be for a time . I was able to reset myself .”
Through focused attention participants gain insights , ease anxiety , and embrace possibilities . The stories , metaphors , people , animals , vistas , and new experiences in the Agricultural Reserve naturally renew and restore its visitors . Guests become part of fabric of life at the farm as the day progresses and begin to embrace its vitality . Eleanor Roosevelt once said , “ A new day brings new thoughts and new strength ,” and The New Day Project makes this real . As one retired veteran revealed , “ This was my first retreat , but definitely not the last . I will use what I ’ ve learned and felt to work on making changes in my life .”
Since the launch in 2021 , leaders from Frederick Health , the Montgomery County Police Department , the Chamber of Commerce and the University of Maryland have attended New Day retreats and R & R events . Recent inquiries from people living with cancer , teachers , caregivers , chaplains and veterans support the need for farm-inspired retreats .
Its impact is profound . A wellness coordinator at a large corporation puts it this way , “ There has never been a more important time for self-care and self-compassion . As our teams explore the countryside and enhance their personal wellbeing through The New Day Project , they also strengthen our culture of well-being .”
Jane O . Smith focuses on resilience and renewal as a mentor and presenter . Her career in healthcare and her journey with breast cancer inform much of her work .
