Roundtable artist Betsy Casaleno painted a watercolor of Heater ’ s Island near Point of Rocks to honor the history of the Piscataway people who lived there in the early 1700s . At that time they were hit with a smallpox epidemic , probably from exposure to European colonials , though many survived . Afterwards , they apparently left the area to move farther north .

Riverworks Art Center ’ s Community Roundtable Projects are designed around a central focus to bring artists and the community together in sharing and conversation of important issues , topics , and cultures through the medium of art . This project was financed in part with funds from Heritage Montgomery and Montgomery County Government as well as State Funds from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority , an instrumentality of the State of Maryland . The Historic Medley District also provided space for the public presentations .
