Check our website for more information . of vegetables and herbs . They gather eggs from chickens and geese . This year they will welcome a pair of goats with the plan to harvest fibers to create sellable goods .
The products from the farm are sold to the parent community in a weekly market directly as produce or as ingredients found in baked goods , jams , hot sauce , and more . The students discover the balance between the work and resources needed to create goods for market and the value of their goods . They learn the importance of treating the soil and their animals well .
Head of School Natasha Soderberg explains : “ The main thrust of the farm is that it is completely student driven … they come up with ideas and , if they fail , that gives them real-world experience .” She further describes how agriculture fits within the school program : “ The farm is part of their micro-economy and feeds into the adolescent need for real world experience , risk taking , and actual purpose .” The land has much to teach Butler Montessori ’ s children , particularly when the school deliberately employs it within the overall academic structure .
The certificate students brought home from a beautiful spring day on the shore of Chesapeake Bay showed that Butler Montessori completed the many requirements of the Maryland Green School Program . Those requirements were met naturally , by giving students the time to learn from and love the land they inhabit , and providing them the knowledge and tools to protect it .
