G
aruda Aviary receives at least
one request every week from
people looking to re-home their
parrots to our sanctuary because
they have become too difficult to
keep. Most of those parrots are
adoptable, so we will refer them
to the appropriate organization
or resource. We specialize in the
unadoptable parrots...parrots that
have become hyper-aggressive or
neurotic due to mistreatment or
repeated abandonment, parrots
that have been rescued from par-
rot mills, hoarders and other cruel
or otherwise unfit environments.
Most of the parrots we accept have
behavioral issues sufficient to make
them inappropriate for adoption to
most private owners. We specialize
in “highly problematic” parrots.
Why would anybody abuse a parrot? A few of Garuda Aviary’s parrots have been traumatized by being illegally stolen from
their natural habitat or from being used as breeding stock in parrot mills. But parrot abuse most often occurs in domestic settings
with their owners because these beautiful and intelligent birds are very difficult to care for, extremely demanding and highly destruc-
tive. A parrot owner is far more likely to abandon their bird rather than keep it for its entire life, which can be well over 50 years.
