K
ick-start the festive season
at the St Stephen’s Chapel
Christmas Fete.
Although no one is quite
sure when the first Christmas fete took
place at Stanley’s St Stephen’s Chapel,
it’s certainly been held every year since
1989, and that’s pretty good going for a
place as transient and ever-changing as
Hong Kong.
It’s a charming fair, very much like an
English church fete in feel. It’s not wall-
to-wall with people selling merchandise;
instead it has charity stalls, games
for children and lots of entertainment.
Generally the kids run around playing
while the adults enjoy a beer. Perfect!
Manned by volunteers from the church,
the jovial atmosphere is very infectious
and is sure to get visitors into the
Christmas spirit.
A Christmas fete wouldn’t be a
Christmas fete with Santa Claus, though,
so the highlight of the fair has always
been a visit by Santa, who arrives by
helicopter, no less. Visitors hoping to see
the big man in red should arrive at the
fair by noon.
This year’s fair takes place on 1
December from 11am-4.30pm. Entry
costs just $20 for adults, with free entry
for children. All proceeds go to the
chapel’s charities. Sadly this is likely to
be the last fair for a few years as the
sports field is being remodelled, so this
is definitely one not to miss.
