Positives of Exposure to
Adult Speech
Researchers at the University of York have identified
a link between children exposed to high quantities
of adult speech and their nonverbal abilities, such as
reasoning, numeracy and shape awareness.
Researchers attached tiny audio recorders onto the
clothing of children aged two to four years old. They
recorded real life interactions between 107 children
and their parents and caregivers over three days for up
to 16 hours per day. Parents and children were asked
to complete activities designed to test their child's
cognitive skills. Researchers found that the quantity
of adult spoken words that a child hears is positively
associated with their cognitive ability. They also found
that high quality adult speech may have benefits for
children's linguistic development. The study analysed
the recordings to look at the impact different parenting
styles might have on the children's behaviour. This
study highlights the importance of treating early life
experiences as dynamic and changeable rather than
static entities. Source: Science Daily
