travel Tai Long Wan Offering some of the best beaches in Hong Kong, Tai Long Wan (which translates to Big Wave Bay) is accessed from Sai Kung and is made up of four beaches: Sai Wan, Ham Tin Wan, Tai Wan and Tung Wan. Tai Wan and Tung Wan are the furthest beaches and therefore a little more remote, but well worth the effort (the rickety bridge is interesting). Tung Wan is stunning and usually pretty quiet. There are no facilites or lifeguards, but this means you can take your dog, too. Visitors are guaranteed to forget they’re still in Hong Kong! Life’s A BEACH Who needs Thailand when we have such amazing beaches in Hong Kong? Check out these stunning options Clearwater Bay Don’t let the steps down, or the carpark that always seems full (even in the rain) put you off, Clearwater Bay Beach offers sparkling waters (the clue is in the name!) and great natural scenery. There are showers and a small food hut selling drinks and icecreams. Cheung Sha Beach Located on Lantau, Lower and Upper Cheung Sha Beaches each offer a slightly different vibe, with Lower Cheung Sha offering more dining options. With such a large expanse of sand, there’s plent of space to sunbathe, even for the resident water buffalo Repulse Bay A great choice for those who don’t want to go off the beaten track, the crescent-shaped Repulse Bay Beach is easy to get to and offers access to great facilities. A variety of food options are available at The Pulse, although not a cheap option. There’s a small pay area for children and clean washrooms. Big Wave Bay OK, so the waves may not be up there with those in Bali, but Big Wave Way is probably the closest Hong Kong has to offer for surfers. (See our Watersports article for more info). The water is clean and the facilities comfortable. It’s usually a little quieter than it’s neighbour, Shek O Beach. Spring 2020 59
