The Varkey Foundation, a non-profit organisation
established to improve education for underprivileged
children, asked 27,500 parents across 29 countries about
their children’s education. The survey found that parents in
emerging markets spend more time helping their child with
their education out of school than parents in established
economies. Twenty-five percent of parents wordwide
spend seven or more hours a week helping their child with
their education, this figure rises to 62 percent in India, 50
percent in Vietnam and 39 percent in Colombia. Parents
in established economies are spending less time, with
only 10 percent spending seven or more hours a week in
France and Japan, and 11 percent in the UK. It also found
that Russian parents are the most concerned about the
quality of teachers, parents from South Korea are the most
concerned about environment for the child, and parents
from the UK are most concerned about the school’s
academic record. www.varkeyfoundation.org

First Forest School
Development Centre
ICHK Hong Lok Yuen was officially named as Asia’s inaugural
Forest School Development Centre last month. The school
is now looking to go beyond this to become the regional
centre for Forest School teaching and learning. Forest School
Leader Ho Mei Chau delivers a structured programme of
lessons, which enable students to learn and thrive in the
outdoors. “Research shows that if children have access
to a rich outdoor environment, they will have greater self-
esteem, be more confident and develop better concentration,
resilience and independence.” www.ichk.edu.hk
