As a general rule , a chip is used when you are no more than five paces off the green without a long carry . Use your 7-iron or 8-iron to produce a low running shot .

Reading the Lie
The way the ball lies in the grass will affect how it flies and rolls . Grass between the ball and clubface creates a different ball flight and spin rate than when there is no grass .
• Lies in the Fairway - you can expect good control and predictable spin .
• Lies in the Rough - the ball will come out with less spin and , therefore , less control .
