“The land of leave it all behind” certainly rings true for the City of Portland. The sky and water seem to be filled with colors of cerulean blue and turquoise, all dissolving into a brilliant green as the breeze dances on the water. It’s almost magical! Located just across Nueces Bay from its much larger neighbor, Corpus Christi, Portland has been the dream of many as the place they would most like to live and raise a family. Blessed with shining bays and secluded beaches, Portland seems to have it all; beauty in nature, a top rated school system and every possible amenity a city could offer. Yet Portland is different. The City of Portland is unique among its’ coastal sister cities in that it has created and maintained a higher than average quality of life. Portland has been fortunate in their city leaders, a group of like-minded city servants dedicated to efficient and effective government with a focus on family. In 2015 the City was awarded the Municipal Excellence Award for Communication by the Texas Municipal League (TML). Each year TML recognizes 10 cities (five with populations under 25,000 and five with populations over 25,000) with awards for excellence in the categories of Management Innovations, Communication Programs, City Spirit, Public Safety, and Public Works. TML is a voluntary association of more than 1,130 Texas cities, more than 1,000 of which share Portland's classification of a population below 25,000. The City of Portland is situated on the second highest bluff on the Gulf Coast and overlooks both Nueces and Corpus Christi bays, and the views from the city are spectacular. People have moved to the city because of its dedication to family values, its’ close proximity to Corpus Christ and the many amenities it has to offer. The city also features one of the top school districts in the state covering a 101 square mile area. Over 4000 students from the Portland area are enrolled in the school district.
