PLASTIC OCEAN June 2014 | Page 8

OCEAN TRASH

affects us all, but it especially affects our most precious creatures, to whom the ocean is home.

As humans, we produce a lot of waste. About 80% of the trash in the ocean is generated on land, and about 90% of that trash is plastic. It's obvious that this creates a lot of problems for the ocean and its inhabitants, but what are the problems?

In this section of "Plastic Ocean" we will examine the effects that ocean trash has on the world. To everything from hermit crabs using trash as homes to sea turtle's shells morphing around those pesky plastic soda holders, ocean trash has some disastrous consequences.1

Q: Why is ocean trash bad, exactly?

A: Because it kills, maims, and destroys a habitat we love.
