received a number of patents in the early 1890s for his invention of an efficient, slow burning, compression ignition internal combustion engine. Eight years later, in August 1893, Diesel’ s prime model— a 3m iron cylinder with a flywheel at its base— ran on its own power for the first time. Three years after this, Diesel’ s improvements to his design resulted in a model with mechanical efficiency of 75.6 %— a significant improvement on the steam engine in use at the time, which had an efficiency of 10 %.
Diesel’ s engines were used to power pipelines, electric and water plants, automobiles, and trucks, and later, used in mines, oil fields, and factories. In 1902, six years after Diesel unveiled his improved engine, a company named Forest City started manufacturing diesel generators: diesel engines coupled with electric generators. n
