INDUSTRY INTELLIGENCE With mining companies focusing more and more on reducing their environmental footprint, Tomra has developed sensor- based sorting technologies they claim will offer mining operations the dual benefits of energy efficiency and the ability to recover valuable ore even from sub-economic deposits or dumps. According to Tord Svensson, Tomra’s head of Sorting Mining, for a mining company to become more sustainable and profitable, it requires a shift in focus that places more value on potentially limited commodities like water and ore. “To achieve an environmentally-focused and efficiency-oriented production process – which is integral to Green Mining – it is necessary to implement solutions right from the beginning of the process. This is where ore sorting equipment comes in: using these technologies in the early stages of mining reduces waste material and shrinks the carbon footprint, while increasing profitability,” he says. X-Ray Transmission (XRT), one of Tomra’s solutions, separates dry material of various ore and minerals based on their atomic density, irrespective of surface properties and thickness. This means that it is not necessary to crush or grind every Sorting technology makes green mining possible Tomra’s sensor-based sorting technologies are developed to be more environmentally sensitive. rock into smaller particles, which results in massive savings of energy, water, and their related costs. Considering that grinding is the most energy-intensive part of the production cycle, as an estimated 50-75% of the energy used in mining is for the liberation and comminution of ore and minerals, this technology can have a SA launch for ground-breaking new drill ELB Equipment recently became the launch client for one of the blasting and mining world’s most eagerly anticipated drills in recent times. The new Furukawa DCR22 is a collaboration between a copper mine, distributor ELB Equipment and Furukawa, the manufacturer, which led to the development of rugged and fast new down-the-hole drill rig that is specially designed for tough, hard rock conditions. According to Jimmy Linton, ELB Equipment product manager for Furukawa, due to the massive strides made and success of the developments of this drill, Furukawa has adopted the new machine and launched it globally for countries where hard rock and tough operating conditions occur. Telescopic handlers get tougher Complementing the company’s successful construction and agricultural products, Bobcat has launched the new Waste Expert range of telescopic loaders, introducing a new, dedicated material handling solution for the waste and recycling markets. A prototype Waste Expert machine (based on the TL43.80HF model) shown by Bobcat at the Bauma exhibition earlier this year was warmly received. As a www.equipmentandhire.co.za result, Bobcat has decided to offer four of the company’s current productivity and high-flow telescopic loaders, namely the TL35.70, TL34.65HF, TL38.70HF and TL43.80HF, as new Waste Expert machines, all powered by Bobcat Stage IV 74.5 or 97 kW (100 or 130 HP) engines. These new Waste Expert telescopic loaders offer lifting capacities from 3.4 to 4.3 tonne and lifting heights from 6.5 to 8m. significant impact on the sustainability and profitability of a mining operation. Pre-concentration techniques like sensor-based sorting have been proven to reduce energy consumption by about half, resulting in a considerable reduction of the CO 2 footprint and providing a highly cost- effective solution. New era in surface drilling South African company Azize Equipment has secured the sole rights to supply, service and support the full line of global company Sunward’s drill rigs and excavators to southern African countries. Listed on the Shenzen stock exchange and a top 50 global construction equipment manufacturer that produces over 11 000 excavators and drilling rigs per annum, Sunward Equipment Group is perfectly positioned as a highly reputable and experienced partner for Azize. The extensive Sunward offering was unveiled during a prestigious launch in Carolina, Mpumalanga earlier this year. “We are extremely excited about the birth of a 100% black-owned Azize, a level 1 company, and our partnership with the globally renowned Sunward Equipment Group,” says Pascal Mbambo, managing director of Azize Equipment.
