The general feeling at the Investing in African Mining Indaba in February was one of optimism— and that was before the resignation of then-President Jacob Zuma and the election of current President Cyril Ramaphosa. Speaking about the potential impact of the changes to South Africa’ s political landscape on the mining sector, André Kuhn, mining lead for Cummins Southern Africa, said:“ The atmosphere at the Mining Indaba was very positive, and if you look at South Africa’ s neighbouring countries and listen to their sentiment, they are all indicating that they are open for business. This puts quite a bit of pressure on the South African government to resolve the whole issue surrounding the Mining Charter and to make it more investor friendly. It was quite pleasing to hear President Ramaphosa engage and say that one of his key focus areas is exactly that: to revitalise the mining sector.
“ What is even more gratifying is that this is not a one-sided declaration; the sentiment is echoed by business. The Chamber of Mines has indicated that they have withdrawn their court action against the Department of Mineral Resources, meaning that we have a combined resolution from both government and business to resolve this matter and get mining back on track,” he added.“ The CEO of Anglo American recently said they are very excited because they want to be part of the change, and I think that is the prevailing sentiment in South Africa at the moment: that mining companies— and their support structures— are open to being part of the change.”
Kuhn also took the opportunity to announce the development and roll-out of an advanced fault-finding electronic support tool that identifies the origin of technical glitches and the parts required to repair them. There is currently a large focus on big data in the mining sector, particularly in the areas of telematics, condition monitoring, and preventive maintenance.
