Consumables are currently one of the company’s biggest
drives, and helps customers in choosing the products
best suited to both their machines and their specific
operating conditions.
and even to Kindles. Nienaber explains
that this information can be limited to a
specific geographical location, ensuring
that only the relevant people receive the
notifications. “The app also allows for
two-way notifications,” he adds, “so the
person receiving the initial notification
can send a message back up the line.”
The reports function is role
dependent to prevent people from being
swamped by information that is not
relevant to their area of responsibility.
The reports are customisable and
display information such as production
section, status, and machine health, at
levels ranging from managerial to field
reports. “These are more interactive
than normal paginated reports, and
we have designed them to show only
one or two key areas, such as tonnage
for a production report, for example,”
Nienaber explains. “We did this
primarily because you don’t want to be
swamped by information, particularly
when you are using a mobile device that
has a relatively small screen. And we can
basically create any type of report that
a mine could want, from heat maps to
maps of South Africa — anything that
a customer could want, we can create
for them.”
The final core area covered by the
app is contacts. “The contacts list
that comes up is also role-based,”
says Nienaber. “A field service
technician would have different
people he would need to be able
to contact than a supervisor or
manager, for example, and we tailor
the contacts list based on which
contacts a specific user class would
most need to contact. Once you open
the contacts section, clicking on the
specific contact will automatically
dial the number, so you don’t have
to exit the app and go into your
address book to make a call.” These
contact lists are also customisable on
both a role and an individual level if
requested by the customer.
Not just data analytics
While people can be forgiven for
thinking that, based on the name,
JoySmart Solutions and the JoySmart
Services Centre are all about data and
analytics, Papenfus is quick to point
out that this is only one aspect of the
whole. “Our data monitoring centre
is based here, but that is not all this
centre is. Data is only one part of the
equation. What is far more important
is what you do with the data you
have,” he says.
“So, for example, we can use the data
generated by our machines to identify
