NEW EQUIPMENT NEWS
Liebherr Components presented a range of products for the mining industry at the International Mining and Resources Conference( IMARC), which took place in Melbourne, Australia, from 31 October to 2 November 2017. The company also took the opportunity to introduce its new D9812 diesel engine to the Australian market. The D9812 is built to withstand the tough conditions of global mining, and can be adapted to fulfil a range of emission standards: fuel consumption optimised, Tier 2, or even EPA Tier 4 final.
Bobcat Equipment South Africa’ s B730 backhoe loader, aimed at contractors, municipalities, and local utilities, can be configured for applications ranging from construction to roadworks and maintenance, landscaping, and materials handling. According to product specialist Jan Stansfield, the 4.4l, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine delivers power for the most demanding applications, while the powertrain reduces operating costs and guarantees reliability and uptime. The B730 has an open-centre hydraulic system, unloader valve, electrohydraulic differential lock common, four-speed powershift transmission, tandem gear pump, and limited slip differential. Its 400mm ground clearance and 25-degree back ramp angle offer increased climbing performance over steep slopes.
Atlas Copco has launched a new range of air compressors for secure integration into utility trucks and other OEM applications. The space-saving 8 Series Utility range consists of four compressors, available in flow ranges between 3.7 and 5.4m 3 / min and working pressures between seven and 12 bar. It has a 10 % smaller footprint, on average, than comparable compressors, with all models weighing less than 750kg, including those with the option of a built-in generator. The small size and light weight means that the 8 Series can fit into more vehicle types. All compressors in the range feature a robust, corrosionresistant C3-rated canopy, with a high-performance, fuel-efficient engine fitted as standard.
Self-activating, portable fire-extinguishing Fire Orbs
Fire & Security Techniques
Centurion-based Fire & Security Techniques( FST) has introduced to the local market the FST Fire Orb, a unique, self-activating, portable fire-extinguishing device that activates automatically when in contact with open flames. Effective against all types and classes of fires, from electrical shortages to fat, oil, and paraffin stove fires; vehicle fires; and workshop and factory fires, the easy-to-use, cost-effective fire-extinguishing device can be wall-mounted for maximum effectiveness, according to FST CEO, Neil Hughes.
The FST Fire Orb activates automatically upon direct contact with open flames— not heat— and is simply rolled or thrown into the fire, whereupon it activates within three to seven seconds. Upon activation, it emits a loud bang of between 119dB and 138dB as a warning signal, and disperses the dry chemical powder to extinguish the fire.
Each FST Fire Orb weighs only 1.3kg, making it lightweight and easy to handle and operate, and comprises a lightweight case of frangible material, with a protective exterior sheathing. The internal cavity contains a pyrotechnic detonator at or near the centre of mass. Activated by fuse cords extending to the surface, the device is filled with monoammonium phosphate, a non-conductive dry chemical powder, which means it can be used on any electrical product without resultant damage. The detonator incorporated in the FST Fire Orb is a small, nonlethal explosive mechanism. The use of low-density, low-mass components means that no part of the device has sufficient mass or density to constitute a ballistic hazard, or result in concussive shock.
The FST Fire Orbs have passed tests conducted by the PSB Corporation and Sirim Qas
International for Class A, B, and C fires. Additional tests carried out include thermal resistance, burst effect, sound level, compression resistance, and drop tests. The devices are regulated and certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2001 and have also been approved and classified by the South African Police Service.
“ We offer a free riskassessment service for all clients interested in the product, whereby our risk-assessment manager advises suitable installation requirements pertaining to customer specifications,” says Hughes.“ The product is far more effective than traditional fire extinguishers, which must be operated manually in order to be effective. In addition, fire extinguishers have no fire-alert activation to warn any bystanders, and are bulky devices that weigh 10 – 15kg on average.” ■
