P&L DISCUSSIONS

Meeting Maggie Hassan

I had learned that the dinner I was attending was called The Truman Dinner and it was for the Coos County Democratic Committee to promote unity and family. After a few people were done welcoming and introducing, Senator Hassan got up on stage. My attention was undivided, unlike when my date had originally asked me to this dinner. She spoke so great in front of all those people, even though she does it all of the time because she holds public office. I would’ve never been able to step a foot on stage. She was not the only one to speak, however. The event lasted nearly three hours. Most of the speech’s got very repetitive after the third or fourth. My date had even started to space out staring at the ceiling. I realized that the only real part about the dinner that I enjoyed was when the speech’s were actually about politics and not some long antidote on something that was irrelevant.

After all of the speeches were over and people were getting ready to leave I knew that would be my only chance to say anything to her before everyone else tried to do the same thing. My mind was blanked on my short walk to her table and I didn’t know exactly what I was going to say. I surprised myself when the words that came out of my mouth actually made sense. I thanked her for everything she’s done in her time of being a Senator and that I really appreciated listening to her speak. She shook my hand and walked outside with my friend’s boss and the rest of us. She mentioned to my dates’ boss “It’s great to see the youth in the area take interest in politics, even just coming to the Truman dinner.” This was a turning point for me and sprung me into having a strong interest in politics. I found that engaging in politics is a great hobby if you’re willing to be open minded.
