The
carnegie Musesum of
Natural science
A million years ago, dinosaurs stilled roamed the Earth,
and the Tyrannosaurus-Rex was at the top of the food
chain and other prehistoric creatures like the Diplodocus
carnegii and Apatosaurus louisae were eye-level with
two-story buildings and as big as a Blue Whale. This
period is known as the Mesozoic Era.
These great reptiles can be found, in Carnegie Museums
of Natural Science in the “Dinosaurs in Their Time”
Exhibit.
“Dinosaurs in Their Time” Exhibit contains one of the
world’s largest collections of Jurassic dinosaurs and is the
third largest exhibit to have mounted dinosaurs displayed
in the United States.
Founded in 1896 by Scottish-American businessman and
philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the museum now hosts
over 21 million specimens and more than ten thousand of
them are on display at one time in the 20 galleries.
The musesum has been adding to its collection since
1899. It’s most recent edition is an oviraptorsaur
species in 1998. It has yet to be given a name.
“Dippy” the Dinosaur
The museum gained attention in 1899, when scientists
who worked for the Carnegie Museum of Natural
Science unearthed Diplodocus carnegii in Wyoming,
which would affectionately be called “Dippy.”
Today, there is a life-size model of “Dippy” in front of
the museum and occasionally wears a scarf in the
winter. The model was created in commemoration of
the 100th anniversary of the expedition in 1999,
funded by Andrew Carnegie, which led to the discovery “Dippy.” There copies of “Dippy” that can be
found across the world.
