Just saying her name and title is impressive: Jane Childers,
M.Ed. [Master of Education], ICALP [Certified Academic
Language Practitioner/Instructor of Teaching], founding director
of The Learning Center. But even more impressive is meeting her
in person, sitting with her, learning from her, witnessing her.

As Mrs. Childers said at least a half-dozen times in her
remarks at the opening assembly of The Learning Center
on August 25, 2010, “We are changing lives.” Indeed.
After ten years as Director, Mrs. Childers has
announced her retirement from The Learning Center
and from The Lexington School – something about
playing with her nine grandchildren beckons her, and
understandably so. Because of her strong and dedicated
leadership, The Learning Center today is a nationally
recognized school-within-a-school, inspiration to the
founding of yet other similar programs throughout the
United States. Faculty and/or administrators from at
least 15 schools have visited The Learning Center for
insight, guidance, and direction. While that number
is impressive, it is important to remember each school
represents specific students and families, like those of
The Learning Center itself, who have been touched and
bettered by Mrs. Childers and her team because “We are
changing lives.”
