Dr. Eunice Beatty, Lower School Head, knows
the Academy Center as well as anybody,
with her office just steps away from the
new front door.
Dr. Beatty’s Words:
The new spaces in our school show how much our
community cares about our students. Students were a
priority from the beginning of the construction project,
and that shows in each new or expanded area. In open,
welcoming, and unified spaces, with all our students in
close proximity, children complete special projects with
peers, participate in indoor recess, and interact with a
variety of new resources. Overall excitement for these
8
new spaces brings excitement to learning. Whether
it’s a group project on geography or inventing a new
game during recess, you can see the enthusiasm on each
student’s face. I encourage every family and prospective
family to visit and see the new spaces at TLS for
themselves. On any given day, you see lower school or
middle school classes and activities occurring in the new
spaces. The first week of school included a fourth and
fifth grade student team and leadership activity. The
new space quickly and easily became our indoor space
as a rain plan. The new academic area of the second
floor was the perfect venue.
One also cannot overlook the flexibility of the space
and furnishings. With a little creativity, we can refashion
any of our new spaces into whatever atmosphere we
want. We can move tables and chairs to design our own
WOW! classrooms and gathering spaces. Two areas that
have tremendous potential are the new outdoor spaces
– the library patio and the Colt House. As the weather
gets warmer, these will be grand instructional, meeting,
and entertainment spaces.
The ONE School Project has truly
