THE SOUND OF
SOUTH AFRICA
by Alba Rodríguez Romero
The sound of african music scene includes both popular
and folk forms. Pop styles are based on Zulu (Isicatha-
miya singing Harmonic Mbaqanga), rock, jazz, classical,
gospel, rap, reggae, maskanda, kwaito...
Christian missions provided the first organised musical
training in the country. Pop singers, for example, are from
Angola, Botswana, Camerún and two famous groups are
“Fisk Jubilee Singers” and “Thule Sizwe South Africa”.
The most famous pop singer is Lira. She was borned in
Johannesburg (South Africa). Her name means ‘love’ in
sesotho and she speaks four languages. “Ngiyazifela“ is
one of her most famous songs.
